Kāmana Lakehouse Press Release

21 January 2020

Queenstown’s highest altitude boutique hotel – Kāmana Lakehouse – has appointed a new general manager, Mario Sandulescu.

Mario was formerly the Hotel Manager, assisting with the transformation of the hotel from its previous outdated image to a refined 73-room upscale property, following a multi-million-dollar redevelopment by owners Coherent Hotel Limited.

Mario joined the team after Coherent bought the property, formerly known as Aspen Hotel. Previously he had spent more than 10 years in high-end hotels from Europe and Singapore to Caribbean and United States, most recently leading guest focus operations of luxury property Dorado Beach a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, in Puerto Rico U.S.A.

He then moved to New Zealand with InterContinental Hotels and Resorts in Wellington before joining the Queenstown team in 2017.

“I am honoured to lead a fantastic team in developing a new, independent hotel brand.”

Mario says identifying and promoting talent has been the key success of Kamana’s customer service experience, and a highlight for him.

“I know I can count on my team members, who joined us in what looked like an impossible journey back in 2017. I appreciate their genuine, compassionate and enthusiastic approach to our daily work, and I am grateful for all that I learned from each and every one of them.”

Another highlight is the rise of Kāmana Lakehouse’s guest review ranking in Trip Advisor to the top 10 and the Qualmark accreditation to 4.5 stars.

Mario says he is now looking forward to continuing the development, including a hot pools offering due to launch in March.

About Kāmana Lakehouse and

Queenstown’s newest boutique accommodation, Kāmana Lakehouse, opened in late 2018 following a multi-million-dollar brand development by owners Coherent Hotel Limited.

Located high above Lake Wakatipu, on Fernhill at the heart of Aspen Grove, there are 73 contemporary ensuite rooms, surrounding a central dining and event space. The hotel restaurant and bar, Nest, takes on Mediterranean classics using fresh kiwi ingredients with a unique selection of New Zealand Gin & Tonics and an extensive list of Central Otago wines.

The interior design and brand positioning are inspired by the Kāmana bird and its natural habitat. The Australasian Crested Grebe or Kāmana [in its Maori name] is a bird native to New Zealand’s southern lakes region including Queenstown. A rare and elegant presence on the Otago lakes, it is regarded as a treasure by locals.
